We are happy to announce that Boxon wins the PackTheFuture Award 2020 for the rPET Big Bag! The award is based on an initiative by ELIPSO, French association for plastic packaging and IK Industrievereinigung Kunststoffverpackungen e.V.

Out of a total of 58 submissions, Boxon’s rPET Big Bag, which is made from used PET bottles collected in Indonesia, receives the award the category “social benefit”. The award is based on an initiative by ELIPSO, French association for plastic packaging and IK Industrievereinigung Kunststoffverpackungen e.V. The aim of the competition is to focus on the innovative potential of plastic packaging across Europe.

IK and Elipso have announced the winners this week in a press release. All winning submissions are presented in the “Innovation Book” which is available on the official award’s website. The award ceremony will take place on November 24th, 2020 at the packaging fair ALL4PACK in Paris. The original date 12.5.2020 as part of the Interpack in Düsseldorf had to be postponed due to the Corona crisis.

It is an important recognition that shows that the packaging sector, which has a very specific responsibility towards environment, can create new sustainable packaging solutions and perspectives for a better future through innovation and commitment. For this reason, Boxon promotes the sustainability dialogue within and beyond the packaging industry – be it with customers, suppliers or own employees.

The R-PET system: How a used plastic bottle becomes a Big Bag

The award-winning product is a big bag made entirely from recycled PET bottles. The PET bottles used for this purpose are collected in Indonesia in public buildings such as schools or organizations before they are delivered to the recycling plant. Since the used bottles are collected directly after use, they are of good quality. The re-use for big bag production prevents marine pollution as the bottles do not end up as litter in the oceans.

Overall, the R-PET Big Bags have numerous positive effects on the environment: Learn more about the award winning rPET Big Bag on our website.

Solar Energy for education and jobs in Tanzania

In 2019, 35 committed Boxon customers compensated for a total of 395 tons of CO2 by ordering 36.760 climate neutral Big Bags from Boxon. A great result, that we aim to even surpass in 2020.
In the context of the carbon offsetting programm, we support a climate protection project in Tanzania, where tons of CO2 are reduced every year by replacing harmful kerosene by affordable solar energy panels. With the contribution of our customers, we help to maintain the project.

High-Tech-Solar-Home-Systems

The climate protection programme implements high-tech solar home systems including a GSM modem that deliver a clean, affordable alternative to fossil fuels for low-income households and small enterprises in Tanzania. The technology reduces carbon emissions effectively, owing to an innovative monitoring approach.

2.5 billion people worldwide live without a reliable electricity source to fill their daily energy needs. They use inefficient and costly fuel-based lighting sources such as kerosene lamps, which greatly curtail their activities once darkness sets in. Kerosene gives little light, is expensive and can cause burn
injuries as well as respiratory and eye diseases – especially children are at risk.

Mobisol, the programme developer, combines solar energy with innovative mobile technology and microfinance to provide high-tech solar home systems (SHS) to remote households across Africa.

The larger solar home systems can power small businesses enabling entrepreneurial customers to create additional income. It also illuminates schools like Arusha Secondary School. The SHSs include a solar panel, battery, lights, as well as a cell phone charger. The systems are currently available in four different sizes meeting the needs of low income households as well as of small enterprises. The smallest unit can light two rooms and charge four mobile phones per day. The largest system powers multiple lights, consumer appliances such as laptops, televisions or solar powered refrigerators and charges up to ten mobile phones simultaneously.

The larger solar home systems illuminate schools like Arusha Secondary School.

Jobs & education

Thanks to this modern information and communications technology (ICT) solution, this PoA will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by the displacement of fossil fuel use, such as in fuel-based lighting systems and/or stand-alone power generators. By substituting kerosene lamps with strong solar powered LED lights and reliable energy, environmental but also social and economic benefits can be achieved. Taking advantage of longer light hours achieved by the electrification of their houses, beneficiaries can greatly increase their productivity through working in the evening.

Impacts and benefits achieved so far

• 9981 t CO2 reduced per year

• More than 200 000 people benefit from better air

• 350 created jobs

• 42600 Solarsystems distributed since project start

• More than 700 people trained on solar installation

• Creation of 24 market hubs and information centres in Tanzania

Be part of the project

By purchasing climate neutral Big Bags from Boxon you can optimize your supply chain’s carbon footprint significantly and in the meantime, help supporting our climate protection project in Tanzania.
Every customer taking part in the project will get an official certificate from the independant climate protection organsation MyClimate with the amount of compensated CO2 and their company name on it. Just ask us about it, we will be happy to help you!

50 used PET bottles make one Big Bag

Boxon converts PET bottles from Indonesia into new big bags. In this
way, we help to reduce local plastic waste and to prevent marine pollution. After use, the Recycling PET Big Bag can be recycled again.

In times of climate change and polluted oceans, it is clear that we have to react. At Boxon, we permanently work on creating the world’s most intelligent and sustainable packaging solutions – that includes products with regard to environmental aspects. Today Boxon offers different solutions with an improved environmental footprint. And with Big Bags made from recycled PET bottles from Indonesia we now take the next step.

The used PET bottles are collected from landfill sites and by individuals, who deliver it to one of the several collection points in Indonesia. At least 10% of the materials are marine litter, originating from beaches and coastal areas. 25 bottles are needed to produce 1 kg of woven recycling PET. This means, that 50 PET bottles are used for the production of an average 2 kg- Big Bag.

Same quality standards, improved environmental footprint

In terms of quality, no compromises have to be made. The same high quality standards are set for the R-PET Big Bags as for the FIBC made of polypropylene. Boxon customers benefit from flexible customization options and a big bag that is optimally adapted to their goods.

While there are no concerns in terms of quality, the positive benefits for the environment are numerous:

• Prevention of marine pollution
• Effective re-usage of PET bottles
• Less ressource input
• Up to 25 % less CO2 emissions

All steps from sorting and cleaning the bottles to processing and the production of Big Bags take place in the same facility, which means short ways and no re-transport or re-packaging. PET can be recycled and reprocessed multiple times without loss of properties. This makes it a
very circular plastic if discarded correctly.

Boxon customers can check with us how the R-PET Big Bags can be integrated into their supply chain. It has never been so easy to improve a packaging’s environmental footprint!

New packaging return & recycling service

In January 2019, the new packaging act has set a new framework for the disposal of packaging in Germany. In order to make it easy for packaging users, Boxon and has launched a pilot project with the German RIGK GmbH: a company founded by the industry for the industry, commerce and agriculture, for the proper and environmentally friendly disposal and recovery of plastic products.

Thanks to the pilot project, Boxon’s customers and their end customers can easily dispose their used Big Bags at one of the many RIGK collection points. Boxon customers benefit from the RIGK services without any own administrative burdens. To use the services, they don’t have to sign an own contract with RIGK, but can simply benefit from Boxon’s license. The license number and sign is printed on to the Big Bags so they can be identified by RIGK upon return.

With this new service, Boxon makes it easy for its customers to access the recycling system. The only requirement is that the bags were purchased from Boxon and that the customer has previously added the service to the order.

Customers improve their environmental footprint

After the return, the big bags go directly into the recycling process: they are shredded and cleaned and processed into re-granulates, which are used to produce new plastic products. In this way, Boxon customers can ensure their used packaging is sensibly reused and improve the environmental performance of their company.

The service is currently available for Big Bag disposal in Germany. That means, that also companies delivering to Germany can use the service, if the Big Bag disposal takes place in Germany.
